Two mobile ciliates frolicking amongst sparkling green microalgae. The smaller rectangular shaped cells are a type of brown microalgae called Diatoms that produce up to 50% of the oxygen in our atmosphere! The large green cells are called Desmids which are an ancient type of microalgae that gave rise to land plants more than 500 million years ago. Seen at 640x magnification. The biggest green microalgae cell is 100 microns in size. (0.01 cm)

A little win! NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moria A little win!
NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty has announced this week that declining eastern blue gropers will be protected in NSW waters for the next 3 years.
Who else thinks this should be a permanent ban?

Thank you @tara.moriarty for listening to the scientific advice and NSW communities

Research released this month found eastern blue groper populations have dropped by at least half around some of the state's most populated areas, including Sydney.

The three year extension will give the state government sufficient time to conduct more research and create a monitoring program that will aid blue groper recovery, and should give us a better idea for how their populations are responding along the coast.

Let's protect this beloved species through a permanent ban on all forms of fishing and create new marine sanctuaries so all our marine life can flourish

We were thrilled to sponsor a school excursion to We were thrilled to sponsor a school excursion to local rock platforms on Sydney's beaches to learn about the intertidal species. The public school has a diverse student group and some of the students had not been to the beach previously. Many thanks to Will Jones, marine biologist and educator from the Marine Discovery Centre, Bondi for leading this engagement. Thanks to @keldajane a dedicated science teacher for pushing for this wonderful initiative for her students.
Hopefully we inspire a new generation of ocean guardians! We'd love to borrow a bus to take more kids to the beach, if you wish to join us on this project!

Loving the People's Blockade. More than 5000 prote Loving the People's Blockade. More than 5000 protesters have gathered over the Blockade this weekend, demanding the Albanese Government rule out new coal and gas mines and impose a 78% fossil fuel export tax to fund new jobs and industries.
The ocean takes the brunt of fossil fueled global warming. The ocean has absorbed about 90 percent of the heat generated by rising emissions.
As the excessive heat and energy warms the ocean, the change in temperature leads to unparalleled cascading effects, including ice-melting, sea-level rise, marine heatwaves, ocean acidification, loss of marine life diversity.
